Watches: A Beginner’s Guide to One of the Most Iconic Time Tellers
Ah, the wristwatch. Sleek, elegant, luxurious, durable, sporty, modern, comfortable, and iconic. With uses ranging from fitness tracking to luxury splurges, watches have captured thousands of people’s imagination and wallets. Today, I’ll be diving into a semi-complete guide to watches.
1: Is it an investment or a flex? This is an interesting question, and it can be both. First, never borrow to buy a watch. Only buy a watch you can afford, and do not just buy it to buy it, instead buy it when something momentous occurs in your life to remember the occasion, like graduating, getting married, having a child, celebrating an anniversary, etc.
2: What watch brand should I start with luxury-wise? It depends on your price range. I’d recommend something cheaper, like Olevs or Stuhrling, but Bulova or Farer if you want a little bit pricier. Never, never, buy a luxury watch from Amazon, but instead buy straight from an authorized dealer or the maker themselves. Some of the dealers can be pretty sketchy, so just be aware.
3: What fitness watch should I get? I start with what phone do you have, then go from there. iPhone? Apple Watch. Pixel? Fitbit or other Google watches. Android? Fitbit or Garmin. Bottom line: go with what you feel comfortable with and is compatible with your phone. I currently run a Fitbit Charge 6 on an iPhone, and while it works, its left me wanting more.
4: Should I get a Rolex? Maybe, but consider your options. There are some nice watches out there by other companies like F.P. Journe that can be more eye catching and unique than a Rolex. I personally don’t love Rolex (I think that the band surrounding the dial is a touch too big on some of their watches, but the Air King watch is nice) but it all comes down to personal taste.
5: I wear a fitness watch to keep track of my health, but I want to wear a luxury watch at the same time. Is this allowed? Wearing two watches at the same time is completely allowed. Kevin O’Leary and General Norman Schwarzkopf (US Army) are two famous people who have worn two watches, one on each wrist. While they chose to wear two luxury watches, a fitness and a luxury watch are completely fine. In fact, there are numerous different ways to wear a watch, so don’t sweat it when it comes to wearing a watch.
6: I want something more rugged and durable. What should I get? Hamilton watches are a great place to start. Designed for the British military , Hamilton watches are a great choice for someone looking for a more outdoorsy watch that is still stylish. While some of their watches can be on the more expensive end, they are worth the cost.
7: Can I honor God with my money and still buy a luxury watch? Yes. Honoring God with your money doesn't mean not spending any money on nice things, it means being wise with it. While you should always give the first fruits of your money to God (tithing), and should spend it wisely, buying a nice watch is completely acceptable, just make sure it doesn't impact other parts of your life negatively.
While this guide is not a total complete and comprehensive guide to watches, it is a helpful guide for beginners and hopefully will help and provide you with some insight into buying a wristwatch.
