I Changed ONE Thing-And My Blog Has Never Been the Same
Introduction
So I've been at this whole blogging thing for around six months now. And around a month and a half, I made ONE change: I got a custom domain. Yes, you no longer need to type in https://wyattunfiltered.blogspot.com to get to my blog. It's now https://wyattunfiltered.com. (Real quick. Does anyone actually type in my blog when reading my posts, or do you just use the LinkedIn link? No shame, just curious.) But when I did make that change, something wild happened. My blog's view traffic skyrocketed. It went from hitting 10 views on a good day to 10 views being an abhorrently bad day. And I have no idea why. So this blog post will be me making two random guesses about why this happened. Because unless one of you shared this blog, and it went viral across several different continents, and it's not one of these, then I'll just blame it on aliens.
Theory One: Robots
Now, I don't mean Terminator robots. I mean those web crawlers that sift through all the websites, and by making it a custom domain, it did something to trip them to seeing my site, and Blogger counted it as a view. For me, this seems like the most likely. Blogger is a very wonky blog service, and while it's free, it does have its issues. So while it may not have happened on another site, the gloriousness that is Blogger may have caused it.
Theory Two: SEO
This one ties into the last theory, but it's less likely. My train of thought is that because the bots are now crawling my site, it has more visibility, and so on, and so when someone looks up Wyatt Unfiltered, my site pops up in a better spot on the list of a thousand websites. Likely? Not as much. Plausible? Yes. It does mean that some poor sap has to actually look my blog up instead of clicking on the handy LinkedIn link, but it means it's not all bots.
Conclusion
So those are my two theories on why my blog has a ton of views. Go see my old LinkedIn post about this from a month or so ago for the concept of this post. And for all those bloggers and web developers who read this, I have a question: Do you have any ideas for why this is happening? Sound off in the comments. Now, if you will excuse me, I have some bots to bonk with my virtual e-tool, ala Blogger-style.
